Cloth diapers

Cloth Diapers Cost Less

Cloth diapers have a higher initial investment, however you only have to buy diapers once or twice. If you bought all your disposable diapers at once in the beginning...enough to last until your child is 2-3 years old...not only would you probably have to add on an extra room in your home to store them, you would be shelling out a couple thousand dollars as opposed to a few hundred dollars for cloth.

Cloth Diapers are Better for your Baby

The manufacturers of disposable diapers use harmful chemicals to make them more absorbent. For example, Sodium Polyacrylate. This is a very absorbent gel that shows up on babies bottoms as little crystals. Not only has this chemical been linked to TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) in tampons (and consequently has been removed from them), it has also been found in babies' urinary tracts, has caused severe diaper rash, bleeding in the perineum and scrotal tissue, fever, vomiting and staph infection in babies. It is also linked to allergies and asthma in children and is lethal to cats if inhaled. Ok yes, our babies are obviously not cats, but this certainly makes me at least a little uneasy.

Another fact is that cloth breathes and this is not only helpful for staying cooler but is also better for avoiding diaper rashes. Studies have shown that over 75% of babies in disposable diapers have incidence of diaper rash, as opposed to only 7% in cloth. Your baby doesn't HAVE to get a diaper rash...it doesn't have to be part of their growing up.
